Homosassa and Crystal River, Florida
Pet friendly assisted living in Citrus County
A parent should not have to give up a dog or a cat to get help with daily life. Residents may bring their pet to either of our communities, Sugarmill Manor in Homosassa and The Gardens in Crystal River.
Can a resident bring their dog or cat
Yes. Both of The Manors of Citrus communities are pet friendly, and a resident may bring a dog or a cat when they move in. Sugarmill Manor in Homosassa and The Gardens in Crystal River both allow resident pets in assisted living and in the secured memory care section, and both have a full time therapy dog of their own.
Whether a particular pet is a good fit depends on the animal and on how much help your parent needs with it, so that part is a conversation with the administrator rather than a form. Call the community and describe your parent's pet, and they will tell you plainly what is workable.
What pet friendly means at our communities
Your parent's own pet, not a visiting one
This is not a monthly pet visit program. A resident may bring their own dog or cat and keep it with them in their room, which is the difference between seeing an animal and still having one.
A therapy dog at each community
Both communities have a full time therapy dog on site, so residents who cannot keep a pet of their own still have one to sit with. At The Gardens that is Bella, who turns up on the activity calendar.
Grounds a dog can actually use
Both communities are single story with gardens, courtyards and shaded walking paths, so a short walk does not mean a lift and a lobby. The Gardens has an enclosed courtyard off the memory care section.
Pets in memory care too
A move into the secured memory care section does not automatically mean giving up a pet. Familiar animals are often steadying for someone living with dementia, so talk to the administrator about what your parent can manage.

- Can my parent keep their pet in their own room, or only visit with it?
- Who feeds and walks the dog on a day when my parent is unwell?
- Is there an enclosed outdoor space a dog can use safely?
- What happens to the pet if my parent moves into memory care later?
- Is there a resident pet already living here that mine would meet?
