HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital sits on the west Pasco County coast in Hudson, along US 19. If your parent is being discharged and cannot go straight home, the closer of our two family owned communities is Sugarmill Manor in Homosassa, about 40 minutes north. The Gardens in Crystal River is about an hour.

That is a real drive up the coast, and we would rather say so than pretend it is around the corner. What it buys is a quieter setting and a home small enough that the same caregivers get to know your parent. Both accept Florida Medicaid, and a quick call gets a straight answer about a room.

The drive from Hudson, and why families still make it

Sugarmill Manor is about 40 minutes north of Bayonet Point along US 19, and The Gardens in Crystal River is a little further. For a family already living on the Nature Coast, or moving a parent closer to relatives in Citrus County, the drive is worth a calmer, coastal community.

If a closer option fits your family better, choose what is closest. If our communities are the right fit, you can walk through the Homosassa community online before you visit in person.

If the hospital recommends a short skilled rehab stay first, that usually comes before assisted living. Ask the discharge planner one plain question: is my parent ready for assisted living now, or is rehab the next step.

Coming straight from a hospital or rehab stay

Medicare can cover up to 100 days of skilled nursing after a qualifying inpatient hospital stay, and that coverage ends when the rehab does. Assisted living is the longer term home that often comes next, with help for daily tasks but not hospital level nursing.

We keep the mechanics short here. For the full picture, read how the move from a hospital stay works, and when you are ready you can schedule a tour.
