Assisted living and memory care near Spring Hill
Spring Hill sits along US 19, and so does Sugarmill Manor. The community is about 20 miles north in Homosassa, roughly a 30 minute drive.
Spring Hill is one of the largest communities on this stretch of the Gulf coast, with a population of 113,568 at the 2020 census, and it is unincorporated, so it has no downtown of its own in the way Brooksville does. US 19, named Commercial Way here, runs along its western edge, and State Road 50, named Cortez Boulevard, runs along the north. A lot of Spring Hill was built and sold as retirement housing, which means a great many families here reach the point of needing more help than a house can provide.
When that happens, the useful thing to know is that the road is already the right one. US 19 borders Spring Hill on the west and runs north into Citrus County, where it is called Suncoast Boulevard, and Sugarmill Manor sits on it in Homosassa. That is about 20 miles and roughly 30 minutes from Spring Hill, on a road most families here already drive every week. The Gardens in Crystal River is farther up the same highway.
Both communities are family owned, and both offer assisted living and secured memory care under one roof. For a Spring Hill family that usually settles the question of what happens later, because a parent who moves in for help with bathing and medications can move into the secured section without leaving the building or changing caregivers. Both accept Florida Medicaid. When you call Sugarmill Manor, ask for Lauren and tell her what your parent is managing on their own right now and what they are not.
Spring Hill was platted in the late 1960s and sold largely to retirees, which is why its street grid is so much newer than Brooksville just inland, and why so many of its households are now facing this decision at the same time.
