About 25 minutes from Citrus Springs to The Gardens in Crystal River.

Citrus Springs is not an old Florida downtown. It was laid out as a subdivision long before most of the houses were built, which is why the streets are wide looping boulevards and why so many lots between the homes are still pine and scrub. US 41 runs through the middle of it, just south of Dunnellon in Marion County, and much of the town carries a Dunnellon mailing address even though it sits in Citrus County. The Withlacoochee State Trail runs through here as well, and the Gulf Junction trailhead at the north end is where the rail trail starts its run south. There is a golf and country club, a community center, and a memorial library, and past those it is mostly quiet residential streets.

The drive from Citrus Springs to The Gardens is about 12 miles and takes roughly 25 minutes. The route runs southwest on County Road 488, the Dunnellon Road, out to US 19 at Red Level, then south into Crystal River. Because US 41 points north toward Dunnellon and Ocala, Citrus Springs sits at a fork: keep looking inside Citrus County, or head north out of it. Twenty five minutes southwest means a daughter can stop in after work, sit through dinner, and be home before dark, and it keeps a parent in the same county with the same doctors and the same church.

The Gardens has assisted living and secured memory care in the same building, so a resident who needs more help later does not have to move to a new town and start over with new caregivers. It is family owned, not a chain, and it accepts Florida Medicaid. Call the community and ask for Ali, the administrator, to arrange a visit or to talk through what a move would look like. If you want to compare, Sugarmill Manor in Homosassa is our other community, a little farther south, and it was voted Best Assisted Living in Citrus County in the Citrus County Chronicle Best of the Best 2026.

Elkcam Boulevard in Citrus Springs is the developer's name, Mackle, spelled backwards, a leftover from the plat that laid out the town's wide looping boulevards long before most of the houses went up.

What families say about The Gardens

Absolutely love this building. Every time I come in there I am greeted with happy faces and smiling patients. It is a great assisted living facility with a home like feel, and every person in the building knows the name of the resident. The staff are extremely friendly and the administrator there is extremely responsive.

This assisted living facility is AMAZING! They help my grandma with her everyday life while still making her feel like she's independent. They help her with eating, her medication, and her personal hygiene.

My grandmother has been living at this assisted living community for several months now, and I couldn't be more grateful for the care and attention she receives.

Yes, both of our communities accept Florida Medicaid. Call The Gardens and ask for Ali, the administrator, about what that looks like for your family.

US 41 points north from Citrus Springs toward Dunnellon and Ocala, so it is a fair question. Crystal River is about 25 minutes southwest, and staying in Citrus County keeps your parent near the same doctors, the same church, and the same friends. Drive both directions before you decide.

Call The Gardens at (352) 794-7601 and ask for the administrator. A real person answers the phone. Tell them when you would like to come and what you want to see.
